Nicaraguan Coffee Growers Process Coffee

This cooperative won the Cup of Excellence award in 2006 with an International Jury Score of 84.46

Cooperativa 5 de Junio was founded on June 5, 2001, and has 100 members dedicated to producing and marketing coffee. All are residents of the Las Sabanas region of Madriz. Guided by the need to find other sources of employment, the cooperative has sought to secure financing from national organizations to support projects related to cattle farming and agriculture.

Certified organic by OCIA International, the cooperative members’ farms are between 1,200 and 1,400 meters of altitude, with extensive shade that contributes to the quality of their coffee. The application of organic fertilizer and careful management including the use of screens, a careful selection of the coffee, in addition to better care and drying also form part of the quality process.

Jinotega, Nicaragua's coffee capital, produces some of the most aromatic coffees in the world. Located in the high, cool mountain of North Centreal Nicaragua, Jinotega coffee is harvested from December through March.

During the coffee crisis of 2000, coffee famers were devasted by low prices and the inability to diversify outside of the coffee sector. Aldea Global--the umbrella cooperative working with thousands of Nicaraguan coffee growers--worked to guarantee a fair price for coffee to the farmers, social and education programs, and access to credit.
