Guatemala's lush volcanic soil produces some of the world's finest coffees. The character of the highland Mayan farmers resembles their coffee: Colorful, elegant, powerful.

Resting at the base of volcano Pacul, Cooperativa Nahualá brings together nearly the whole community of 126 farming families. With Fair Trade dividends, cooperative members have received training and assistance to improve the quality of their land and coffee and have participated in a river clean up and reforestation project in the Ixtacapa River area. Every afternoon and weekend you will find kids playing in the river and climbing trees.

Through Fair Trade, families have also begun to be able to diversify into producing and selling honey and organic bananas. Beekeeping and coffee farming share a symbiotic relationship with the honeybee insuring pollination of the coffee crop. In tradition and celebration of Semana Santa and the beginning of the coffee flowering season, the Nahualá community smells of fresh wood oven baked bread and recently harvested honey being traded with neighbors and friends.

The Nahualá cooperative encourages education in their community and provides scholarships that allow member children to attend local schools.

With more students graduating from school, several young community leaders are enrolling in university, nearly unheard of for the indigenous population in Guatemala. They hope to become community leaders and further facilitate the development and diversification of the community.
